Hello Friends – Well, I’m traveling these two weeks and here I am away from my family, and my sewing machine … what to do? I’ve borrowed a friend’s machine, brought some pre-cut blocks to sew up and can’t wait to post them for you to see how I spent my weekend! My Husband’s Favorite Apron – A Man Apron

My husband loves to make us green smoothies and do other potentially messy things in the kitchen. He used to wear a generic apron. How can this be with a wife who loves to sew? Because he loves the outdoors, bears and eagles, I came up with this heavy canvas stripe fabric apron with bear pockets, lined in flannel with a secret eagle pocket on the inside. It’s probably one of my most inspired designs for a man apron because, of course, I love him so much!

Knitted Umber Scarf by MITFK

I have another dear friend, Kathy, who is the most talented knitter I know. I call her MITFK (My Incredibly Talented Friend Kathy) She is also humble and modest so she won’t let me put her picture up, but I do want to give her credit for this awesome scarf/shawl she made me. I can knit, too. But I can’t do it half as fast as MITFK; nor am I ready for the kind of concentration needed to do an advanced stitch that she can do with her eyes closed … or at least while watching TV. I”ll post some more of her talented work later. You’ll be jealous, and no, you can have her contact information. In 5 years when she’s done knitting for me, I’ll see if she wants any more work …

Easter Apron Smock for MDFA (My Dear Friend A**)

OK, I absolutely know that it is 6 days after Easter and that MDFA is out of town right now. But that won’t stop me from dropping it off at her house to surprise her when she gets back, along with a NEW COPY of Mix and Match Quilt Blocks. It’s the rockin’ book that MDFA keeps lending me and I keep putting a bajillion book marks in and couldn’t live without. So … instead of giving her back the book, I just bought a new one to give to her and hope that will be a super suprise, too. Here’s the belated Easter Apron Smock. Daisy Kingdom Design from “Summer Dill” fabric. Who wouldn’t love this?

Here’s the front on the left and the back shot on the right. Hope you can tell that the edging matches the blue dill and that the edging is also at the top of the pleated pockets!

Yes, I know there were no blogs forever and now it’s like a flood. My day job consumes me most of the time and I only have time for sewing or quilting late at night or on the weekend inbetween gardening. This was the first quilt block I ever made for someone else. It was incredibly fun looking for hippie fabric and for the right design. Just like most of these other quilt blocks, it’s part of the long distance quilting bee that I belong to. Check it out!

Blue Picnic Quilt Block

Another quilt block for my long-distance quilting bee. This quilter’s theme is picnic and blue. The name of this traditional quilting block is Navajo. The center looks kind of picnic-ee (doesn’t it?) It took some time to do those little bitty triangles but it was fun! I can’t wait to see the finished quilt!

Well, how did I come up with that? It just jumped out of my mouth. And now that I’ve ‘percolated’ on it, I find that the meanings are endless. You know the whole Drum-Circle thing? As we drum we are one? Well, I feel the same way about needle-craft. Women (and some men) have been sewing, weaving, hand-knitting and working with fiber and fabric (and fur pelts) for a long, long time. And once it moved out of necessity (survival), it moved into creativity. And here we are today …

So the threads that bind us – weaving our stories as we weave our yarn - a “yarn’ is also a kind of story – weaving people together – I’m in stitches means you’re laughing so hard you can’t stand it – common thread is kind of the way I feel about it. And if you’re still in doubt, then look back into history and see that Quilting is one of the things that women used to do to share socially. Think about it … Quilting Bee … (or Quilting Be …) We are still doing this today.

I recently moved into a new community and found that my sewing machine power cords were packed away about 60 miles away. As I started a journey to find some other cords (borrow, etc.) I found my way to a woman who has the local Quilting Bee club, and she loaned me a machine for free. Well, it wasn’t exactly free, I committed to sewing a quilt top for her club. Their club donates quilts to underprivileged babies - crack babies, etc. I should have taken a picture of it but it never dawned on me that I would ever want to show it to anyone. What was I thinking?

Oh, I can’t post this until I let y’all know that My Dear Friend A** (MDFA) helped me take the pre-cut quilt squares, put them together on her bed in an awesome design, and then taught me how to ‘chain stitch’ the pieces all together. So it began …
